Therapy with Me
As an ADHDer myself, my approach to therapy is neurodiversity affirming, anchored to values of Authenticity, Acceptance, Compassion, Curiosity, Honesty, Mindfulness, Self-Awareness, and Self-Development.
My curiosity about the interconnectedness of the mind and body (the interactions between our senses, emotions, thoughts, and behaviours) underpins therapy with me, alongside the following evidence-based techniques and principles:
- Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is a widely used therapeutic approach that focuses on identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and behaviours. It helps us develop healthier ways of thinking and coping with stressors.
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): ACT utilises mindfulness strategies promoting acceptance of difficult thoughts and feelings while working towards a commitment to values-informed action.
- Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT): MBCT integrates mindfulness practices with cognitive therapy techniques. It involves meditation, present moment awareness, body scan exercises, and breath work.
- Narrative Therapy: Narrative therapy focuses on the stories we tell ourselves about our lives. It helps us reframe and reconstruct our narratives to create more positive and empowering perspectives.
- Schema Therapy: Schema therapy addresses long-standing, deep-seated self-defeating life patterns and beliefs about ourselves and our relationships with others.
- Attachment Principles: Understanding attachment styles helps us explore our own patterns of relating to then develop healthier ways of relating and connecting with others.
- Psychoeducation: Clarifying the “what”, and perhaps even the “why”, associated with our individual experiences can help us step out of “what’s wrong with me?” thinking and into a space of “so what about that?” within which we can grow skills in healthy coping.
- Acute Stress Reduction Techniques: Learning and practicing specific techniques for managing acute stress can be invaluable, especially in the context of high levels of stress.
- General Stress Reduction: In addition to acute stress management, promoting overall stress reduction is important for improving our long-term well-being. This might include lifestyle changes, relaxation techniques, and self-care practices.
- Individualised and Goal-Oriented: My approach is client-centred, meaning it’s adapted to your unique experience and therapeutic goals.
